Chapter 7

Mark

I stare at the landscape of rolling hills filled with a variety of flowers, and there’s no denying it’ stunning, but it pales in comparison to the woman standing in front of me taking pictures of it. We’ve been on the road for the last two weeks, and Amelia has been texting with Harper non-stop, sending her photos along the way. Cannon, Stone, and Hawk are finishing dismantling Colt’s operation. I should probably feel bad about basically ditching the mission, something I’ve never done, except I’ve realized Amelia will always come first, even above my loyalty to the job, and I don’t feel the least bit guilty about it.

We arrived in Sweden a few days ago, and have been slowly making our way to the palace. Apparently, her Uncle Alexander doesn’t appreciate nor understand the necessary caution. He’s contacted me throughout the trip to demand our location, and I had to bluntly explain there is still someone after us and we were going radio silent. Of course, he’s anxious to see the niece he thought was dead, but Amelia is my concern, not what he wants or needs.

While Amelia is occupied, I take a moment to call Cannon, letting him know where we are once he answers, then asking, “It’s official? Colt is finished?”

“Yeah, and we have teams running down the other buyers. We even got the men who initially chased you in Peru,” he informs me.

“Good. Sorry I couldn’t be much help on this one.”

“You are not, and I get it,” he laughs, having recently been in my shoes. “You close?”

“Only a couple more hours. Any details on the unknown yet?”

“Just what we already knew, they aren’t Colt’s,” he says with a sigh. “Now that we’re free, I’ll make it our top priority. For now, keep safe and let Amelia enjoy some family time.”

“I won't be able to relax until we’re at the compound,” I tell him.

“And that might be before we figure this out. From what I’ve seen so far, they’re ghosts.” Unable to argue his points, I start to tell him we’ll talk later, but he stops me, saying he’s putting me on speakerphone because Stone and Hawk just walked in.

After he updates them, Stone complains, as usual, “We've been working our asses off, while Phoenix has been taking the leisurely route through Europe with a Princess?”

“Jealous much?” I ask with a grin they can’t see.

“Enough,” Cannon intercedes. “Phoenix keeps us updated and let us know if you need anything. We’ll keep looking.” And following that decree, he hangs up.

“Was that the guys?” Amelia asks as she joins me and I pull her into my arms for a kiss.

“Yes. They’re back home now, the mission was a success,” I inform her with a smile, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. Our time together has been filled with sex, passion, and love.

“That’s great. I can’t wait to see the base and meet Harper in person. But I’m excited to see my home again too,” she confesses.
